Once, at age 7, my father took my younger brother and I to Castle Craig in Meriden, Connecticut’s Hubbard Park. You can climb to the top of the two-story stone edifice and look out over a cliff, across the park and much of the surrounding city. The moment I ascended the ladder, I was crushed by the hand of God/acrophobia, and immediately dropped to the floor, bawling, absolutely certain that I was going to fall over or through the railings. And the entire time, my five-year-old brother dangled his foot over the railing to fuck with me, while my father looked on, deeply troubled by his pathetic, prostrate son.
So, yeah, I’m not a man built for “extreme.” I fear pain. And, obviously, gravity. And worry too much about consequences in general. But watching this trailer for the upcoming backcountry snowboarding flick “The Art of Flight” is one of the few times I’ve wished I had a little more “watch this, bro” in me.
